How to Build A Jump Shot

Pt. 1 Pick Up Focus

Make (10) on right foot on the right and left elbow

Make (10) on left foot on the right and left elbow

  • Gather the basketball on the last step
  • After gather drive straight up
  • When possible bring the ball over to your start point

Pt. 2: Hold the Ball

Rep out holds until you get the feel of jumping high to shoot and then make (5) shots on each side.

Must be able to stop 1-2 and transfer that energy into your shot.

  • Part 1: Hold the ball at the top
  • Part 2: Shoot but don’t worry about makes and misses

Pt. 3: Two Dribble Pull-Ups

Make (10) going right and make (10) going left
  • Two dribbles four step shots
    • Right, Left, Right, Left and Left, Right, Left, Right
  • Pick up on last dribble
  • Square in the air

Pt. 4: Lateral Separation

Make (5) going right and make (5) going left

Working on the ability to step laterally and pop off the ground

  • Step 1: Hold the ball step laterally 1-2 pull-up
  • Step 2: Hold the ball out wide (1) hand step laterally 1-2 pull-up
  • Step 3: Pound with outside hand step laterally 1-2 pull-up

Pt. 5: Midrange Cross Steps

Make (5) shots going right and make (5) shots going left
  • No hesitation between lateral movements and getting vertical
  • Start with holding the ball, go through footwork and shoot
  • Progress to adding a dribble

Pt. 6: Step Back Progression

Make (5) going right and make (5) going left
  • Two types of footwork
    • Step back 1-2
    • Step back land on two

Pt. 7: BONUS Step Back Drill

Progress as far back as you can go (ideally to the NBA 3pt line) until you miss
  • Step straight back
  • When second foot hits you drive straight up
